As we continue to reflect on and process the incredibly tragic and senseless school shooting that left 21 people dead at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, earlier this week, a stoic truth remains: As school communicators, we know this could happen in any of our communities.
Assign responsibility for specific crisis communication responsibilities.
Emphasize preparation and training.
Provide crisis communications training sessions for all administrators.
Take advantage of social media capabilities for crisis communications.
Expand the definition of affected stakeholders beyond those
who are enrolled in/or work at a specific school.
Establish a memorandum of understanding with the public information officers from first responder agencies to set forth how information will flow during a crisis in or around a school building.
Involve community agencies and identify available resources when developing the crisis communication plan.
