How many years have you worked in school PR?
6 years.

What have you found to be the most rewarding part about working in school PR?
When the stories we share of our students and staff help bring our community together. My district is the second-largest district in the state, in the heart of the state capitol, serving one of the most diverse student populations in the state. When our stories are able to share the unique experiences within public education that bridge connection and shared experiences, it helps our community collectively come together. It's in these moments that remind me why this work matters. We are able to shine a light on the futures of our communities through the accomplishments, challenges and experiences of our students.

What have you found to be the most challenging part about working in school PR? How do you approach those challenges?
One of the challenges is balancing all of the "stuff and things" that come our way. We often in our jobs, whether we are a one person-shop, or like me that has the support of a team of communicators, have the ability to wear a lot of different hats. As a self-proclaimed people-pleaser, I want to be able to always support others who reach out for help, but I'm working to ensure I'm doing the right work, in the right ways, at the right times that help move our long-term strategic goals forward. I'm working through this challenge by being a continued learner. I'm currently starting the process of exploring earning by APR (goal of July by 2024!) and also shifting my thinking overall from tactical to strategic. When I can focus more on the purpose of work, I'm better equipped to help others in my district find the right solution or consult with others to be extensions of our team to build capacity across our district.

What has been your most fulfilling professional experience thus far?
One of the most fulfilling experiences for me professionally has been serving on my state chapter, OSPRA. It has been a way for me to branch out in my leadership skills and has helped me be more confident in my work as a strengthen my relationships with others. It's been very rewarding to know that I can support my district, but also be a thought partner for others when challenges arise. Especially in a state where some of our comms teams can be small, but mighty, the importance of having a strong network cannot be understated.

Are there any emerging trends in school public relations that excite you?
I wouldn't say it's a new trend, but I love the emergence of podcasts! I'm excited to see more of how our strategies shift and change as we start to engage with more Millennial and GenZ parents. I want to go into this next era with an open mind, willing to expand my thinking, comfort-zone and skill to better serve our students and families.
