North Merrick (N.Y.) School District

Walk into any school in North Merrick School District and you’ll find yourself in a 21st-century learning space. 3D printers and Nurreva Span Walls — visual collaboration systems mounted outside of classrooms — are available throughout the school. Third-grade classrooms have flexible furniture such as pedal chairs and stand-up desks. Students participate in an in-district STEM studio offered by a local university. The oldest students in sixth grade utilize Chromebooks with Google Classroom as the students prepare for secondary school.

Not bad for a small, 1,200 students, K-6 district with a limited budget.

Dr. Cynthia Seniuk is at the helm of her district’s expanded use of technology. Seniuk has built the infrastructure, curriculum and relationships that are taking the district to a new level of success and pride for the community.

She partnered with Nassau BOCES to create a greater capacity for this growth, both through staffing and state aid. As a result, Seniuk was able to implement intensive professional development for faculty and enhancements to curriculum for students, while also starting a physical redesign of classrooms, libraries and computer labs to align with the workforce needs of the 21st century.

Robotics and hands-on science exist side by side with traditional critical thinking focuses. From capturing special moments in her "The Superintendent's Smile of the Day" to her e-newsletter, A North Merrick Minute, the district community, parents and staff  are  well-informed, allowing them to benefit from the innovative work being done in the district. In a short time, Seniuk has built a school culture of inclusion, growth and effectiveness.
