Face to face, two-way communication is at the bedrock of every goal set by Hemet Unified School District. Since Christi Barrett joined the district in 2016 as superintendent, she understood that in order to move her district forward, she cannot do it alone. Everyone in the district needs to be on board and work together to create a culture and climate in which their students can succeed.

Barrett has embraced this objective in a multitude of ways.

First of all, in order to remedy inconsistencies in communication between school sites and the District Office, she created the Squad model, where a small team of principals are supported by a member of the Extended Cabinet. Each month, the Squads will attend each other’s schools, visit classrooms and identify best practices they can implement at their own school.

In each of her three years as superintendent, Barrett herself has led each school site in exercises to seek input from district staff. Her first year, she led each school site in a Start, Stop, Continue exercise, which led the district to start specific programs, stop initiatives that were not providing value to students, and continue procedures that worked well. Her second year she led staff in the See, Hear, Feel exercise. Each staff member within the district was able to provide his or her input regarding the prompt, "What would you always and never See, Hear, and Feel in a Premier District?" The input she received became the district's core values. In the 2018-19 school year, the same process was used to create the district’s vision.

Since Superintendent Barrett has come to Hemet Unified, her focus has been to create a premier district in which employees, students and the community can be proud. She is certainly on the right path.
