Union Township Schools
Hampton, NJ

Formerly at Frelinghuysen Township School District, Nicholas Diaz will no doubt apply his skills and knowledge as the Superintendent of the Union Township School District.  With a background as a dual-language teacher, assistant principal, principal and now superintendent, he knows the value of effective communication and is committed to promoting student achievement. Among his accomplishments is the creation of iLearn Academy, a blended-learning professional development program designed for teachers with a focus on best practices. He also started a school Vodcast, “Spanish with Mr. Diaz” to teach students about the Hispanic language and culture.

Colleagues describe Nicholas Diaz as “…a talented, creative leader who has an excellent understanding of lifelong learning…. He has shown his expertise in the areas of communication, leadership, and technology…and has the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the school communities he has served.”

Superintendent Diaz also serves as a mentor to novice leaders through the New Jersey Leaders to Leaders program. A strong advocate of social media, he moderates several Twitter Chats and encourages staff to do the same, and he has presented on “Leveraging Social Media for Effective Communication” at various conferences. Knowing the challenges of working parents, he reaches out through the use of Periscope and Facebook Live, allowing a live look at student awards, events and assemblies.

NSPRA’s Superintendents to Watch

Thanks to a partnership with West (SchoolMessenger solutions), NSPRA is recognizing the 2017-18 Superintendents to Watch. This group of superintendents has fewer than five years of experience as a superintendent and engages and informs their school communities with new communication technology tools combined with tried-and-true techniques. In the year ahead, NSPRA will profile each of these district leaders.
