NSPRA Recognizes Two Learning & Liberty Legacy Leaders

Through the Learning & Liberty Legacy Leaders recognition, NSPRA members and chapters can recognize association members for their positive impact on colleagues’ careers and tireless work behind the scenes on behalf of education and improved communication.

Two exceptional leaders were selected as Learning & Liberty Legacy Leaders in 2020:

  • Tim Carroll, APR, who recently retired after a 25-year career in communications for Allen (Texas) Independent School District; and
  • Tom Scheidel, who serves as the public and media relations coordinator for the Allegan (Mich.) Area Educational Service Agency.

Tim Carroll, APR, has offered outstanding counsel and mentorship to NSPRA members since he joined the association in 1982, leading to a Barry Gaskins Mentor Legacy Award in 2011. He served as president and then executive director of the Indiana School Public Relations Association while jointly serving as communications director with Penn-Harris-Madison Schools in Mishawaka, Indiana, for 14 years. Later he moved to Texas and joined the Texas School Public Relations Association in 1995. He has served on state and national PR committees for 25 years, and he has presented over 100 workshops and conference sessions at the local, state and national levels. He assisted with APR Preparation workshops in Texas as well.

According to his nominators, TSPRA’s “up and coming” leaders will all mention Tim first when asked who has had the most influence on their professional careers.

Tom Scheidel, who is known for his enthusiasm and support, has been a mentor to many school public relations professionals in Michigan and nationally. He served as an NSPRA regional vice president from 2016-19, was a 2015-16 NSPRA Front-Runner and is an active member of the Michigan School Public Relations Association. A former journalist, Tom worked at a variety of radio and television stations, producing programming for local, regional and national markets. He has run his own media and event production company, servicing corporations and non-profits. He is an accomplished and award-winning film maker as well as an avid cyclist.

According to his nominators, Tom is a master of his craft, a leader among his peers in Michigan and nationally, and an exceptional school PR practitioner.
