CCSSO Webinar: Overview of the English Language Proficiency Development Framework

Description: CCSSO is pleased to announce the publication of a new CCSSO resource to provide guidance to states on aligning English Language Proficiency standards with the Common Core State Standards and the forthcoming Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The English Language Proficiency Development (ELPD) Framework outlines the underlying English language practices found in the CCSS and the NGSS, communicates to ELL stakeholders the language that all ELLs must acquire in order to successfully engage the CCSS and NGSS, and specifies a procedure by which to evaluate the degree of alignment present between the Framework and ELP standards under consideration or adopted by states.


The Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts: Shifts and Implications for ELA Instruction

Description: Kansas EAG State Consortium project supported this webinar. Presenters Meredith and David Liben, ELA instructional specialists and professional development leaders, work with Student Achievement Partners, a nonprofit organization founded by three of the contributing authors of the Common Core State Standards that assembles educators and researchers to design actions based on evidence to improve student achievement. The webinar includes discussion led by Sandra Warren, ASES SCASS adviser, and Kris Shaw, ELA specialist in Kansas State Department of Education. The recording and presentation are provided for broad use by educators and leaders interested in learning about the key transitions to instruction and curriculum under the Common Core Standards.


The Common Core State Standards: Supporting Districts and Teachers with Text Complexity

Description: To provide states with additional Common Core State Standards implementation support, the Council of Chief State School Officers hosted a one-hour webinar to share tools and resources to support teachers and districts on text complexity, which is the linchpin of the ELA standards. The webinar featured Sue Pimentel, a member of the Common Core State Standards English language arts writing committee, as well as representatives from the Kansas and Louisiana Departments of Education.

CCSSO Webinar: What Teachers Can Learn from the New PARCC and Smarter Balanced Sample Assessment Items

Description: CCSSO hosted a webinar with 2012 National Teacher of the Year Rebecca Mieliwocki on the recently released Partnership for Readiness for College and Career (PARCC) and Smarter Balanced sample assessment items in English language arts. Ms. Mieliwocki, a seventh grade English teacher, offered her reactions and guidance to fellow teachers on what the new assessment items can illustrate about the Common Core State Standards and accompanying assessments that their students will be experiencing soon. After discussing select sample assessment items from PARCC and Smarter Balanced, Ms. Mieliwocki offered suggestions for teachers - individually and in collaborative conversations with their peers - on how they can reflect on these new expectations for students and the subsequent implications for their teaching practice and for state education agency staff regarding their role in supporting educators to have these rich discussions.


Framework for English Language Proficiency Development Standards corresponding to the Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards

Description: The purpose of this framework is to help school systems design their English Language Proficiency programs to meet the standards put forth by the CCSS and the NGSS. Not only will it meet these new standards, but it also helps to prepare students for college and careers. It explains what states are doing and how expectations differ for English Language Learners.

Description: This backgrounder provides parents with information about the inception, adoption, and importance of the Common Core. It shares resources for parents regarding standards for English language and math, as well as a guide for parents from the National PTA.


Common Core GPS

Description: Cobb County School District shared their microsite designed to help people navigate and understand the Common Core. There are resources for educators and parents, as well as a timeline, and more topic-specific information. Cobb County Schools describe the Common Core State Standards as a way to build upon the strength of current standards to boost the competitive advantage of American students, who for the first time will have the opportunity to meet the academic standards set by top-performing countries.


Bryant Public Schools Common Core Website

Description: Bryant Public Schools has put together a website to explain the Common Core to its constituents. The Arkansas school district has broken down information by grade level, information for parents, tools and templates, and professional development. This resource gives a full understanding of what the Common Core looks like in Arkansas, so communicators can accurately discuss it.
